Celebrating Two-Spirit Voices During Native American Heritage Month

As we immerse ourselves in the rich tapestry of Native American Heritage Month this November, Kindall Evolve is resolute in our dedication to fostering a workplace that not only acknowledges but actively uplifts the unique contributions of our indigenous team members. This month, our focus turns to shedding light on the experiences of Two-Spirit individuals, a group within Native American communities that holds profound cultural significance.

Why Two-Spirit? Addressing Historical Barriers

Our decision to spotlight Two-Spirit individuals is rooted in the understanding that they have historically faced unique challenges within indigenous communities. The term “Two-Spirit” encompasses a diverse range of gender identities traditionally recognized among many Native American tribes. Historically, these individuals held revered roles that went beyond conventional gender norms, acting as mediators, healers, and keepers of cultural wisdom.

However, the broader societal challenges faced by indigenous communities, including colonization, forced removals, cultural appropriation, and systemic injustices, have contributed to barriers that extend into the experiences of Two-Spirit individuals. By focusing on this specific aspect of Native culture, we aim to bring attention to these historical challenges and create a workplace environment that is empathetic, inclusive, and supportive.

Creating a Sense of Belonging for Two-Spirit Team Members

At Kindall Evolve, we believe that fostering a psychologically safe workplace is fundamental to cultivating an inclusive environment. Our goal is to establish a sense of belonging where every individual, especially our Two-Spirit team members, feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. Recognizing and addressing the unique barriers faced by Two-Spirit individuals is an essential step toward building a workplace that honors the diversity of our team.

Practical Steps for Inclusion:

Focus on the human and their experience in the workplace: Acknowledge emotions and ensure that there is space and freedom to share emotion without the stigma of emotions being a “sign of weakness.” Emotions are data and we bring them with us to work. They reflect a need that is either met (the corresponding emotion could be joy or elation), or unmet (the corresponding emotion could be sadness or anger).

We all benefit from being more aware of our emotions, the emotions of others and what those emotions represent. Let’s be curious. Start your team meetings with an emotional check in and see what unfolds.

Encouraging Non-Work Discussions: Advocate for spaces where employees can engage in non-work-related discussions, fostering an environment where all individuals, including Two-Spirit team members, can celebrate their unique characteristics

Establishing Inclusive Language Guidelines: Combat exclusive language by reinforcing guidelines that respect the diverse terms and perspectives within Native American communities, particularly concerning Two-Spirit identities.
